Reading: We continue our work on Unit 5: Now and Then in LEAD21. In Unit 5, students are learning the social studies concepts of past and present communities and how people and new ideas can change communities. Each week students will address one essential focus question related to our theme: Now and Then. Our focus question this week was: How have people changed their community? This week we read a tall tale called: Kumak's Fish. Make sure to ask your child all about it. We worked on strategies to monitor our comprehension as well as the comprehension skill of categorizing and classifying. We also worked on using text evidence, making predictions and drawing conclusions. As always, we also worked on reading fluency and decoding strategies for reading accuracy.
In our small book groups, students read and discussed the third selection from their differentiated readers. Each story had some element of how a person changed their community. Some of the stories were historical fiction and others realistic fiction. Remember the goal is to have your child read at least 10 minutes a day! The green March reading calendar went home last week, so make sure to fill it out. We also continued with our read aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Word Study: We reviewed the oi/oy sound and worked on the air sound, spelled are, ear, air. We reviewed prefixes this week and worked specifically with the un-, re- and mis- prefixes. We also reviewed suffixes this week and worked specifically on the -less, -ness and -able suffixes. We also worked with word relationships.
Writing Workshop: In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday this week and Read Across America Week, the kiddos wrote their own version of Green Eggs and Ham. They are awesome! We then typed them on the laptops.. They will be on display for the next several weeks!
Math: We began Topic 13: Money this week. We worked on identifying coins and dollars, counting different amounts of money, organizing from greatest amounts to least and finding multiple ways to make the same amount. The kiddos had an opportunity to play "Cool Cash Bingo" and work with fake coins. This is an important life skill and I recommend having your child work with real money at home! We continue to get on xtramath in class and I am seeing some good progress with basic facts. Has your child been on xtramath.org at home recently? I hope you are able to log on to the xtramath.org website.
Social Studies/Science: This week we reviewed the water cycle and connected that to our awesome field trip to the Wilderness Science Center. There we learned about water conservation, erosion and the water cycle.
