Week of January 9-13
We had a great week! Make sure to ask your child about MAP testing, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, weather and so much more!
Next week color schedule:
Monday - NO SCHOOL!
Tuesday - Green – Music/PE
Wednesday - Blue – Art **Library Check-out Day!**
Thursday - Red - Spanish/Music
Friday - Orange - PE/Spanish
Reading: We began Unit 4: Seasons and Weather in LEAD21. It couldn't be a more perfect unit to be starting as our weather is constantly changing! We are reading from our big book called, The World of Weather and are exploring the different seasons, and weather patterns. Our theme question for this unit is: How do weather and seasons affect our lives? Our focus question for this week was: What patterns do we see in seasons and weather? Our weekly vocabulary words were: seasons and hibernate. We worked on the comprehension strategies of making connections and comparing/contrasting. We also discussed different nonfiction features and focused on how diagrams help us learn. We continue to monitor comprehension by stopping to ask questions during our reading. In our small groups, we focused on weather patterns and weather words. We also discussed our favorite seasons. I am continuing to read aloud The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it! Don't forget to fill out the blue January reading calendar!
Word Study: We continue to work on the verb tenses of past and present and adding s/es to verbs. We also worked on verb endings -ed/-ing and spelling changes (double the consonant). We worked on multiple meaning words as well as compound words this week.
Writing Workshop: This week we worked on a weather writing piece using the picture book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. We read the story and created our own towns to do the weather forecast from. Then the students brainstormed ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner and wrote a weather forecast using their ideas. They are darling! Next week we will use the green screen app to share our weather forecasts!
Math: We continued our work on Topic 10: Place Value to 1,000 this week. We worked with place value models to build numbers to 1,000 as well as learned about standard form, expanded form and number word form. We also looked at number patterns and puzzles, used number lines to skip count as well as compared numbers. Make sure to work through the math workbook pages for homework this week! I hope you are able to log on to the xtramath.org website. Many students have passed their addition facts. Keep it up!
Social Studies/Science: We continued our work on matter this week. We will wrap up this unit this month and then focus on plants and animals. Next week we will begin working on activities in Social Studies for Kansas Day!
