Reading: It was great to read with each child this week and to learn more about them as readers. We spend a lot of time this week discussing how "READING IS THINKING!" Each day I used a picture book to help the kiddos explore how we think as we read. As the week progressed it was impressive to see how our chart had grown with ideas! The kiddos spent time reading but we also spent time sharing our thinking. One strategy that we used was to use post-it notes to mark ways we did thinking as we read. The kiddos did an awesome job of asking questions, writing I wonder statements, making predictions, making connections, sharing words they liked, discussing character traits, and so much more! Ask your child about ways they think while they read. This is something that can be done each week when they read at home! Don't forget the goal is to have your child read at least 10 minutes per day!
We also began our first topic in the LEAD21 called "My Roles." The theme question for this unit is: What do my different roles say about me? During our reading groups we read texts that focused specifically on our roles at home. We worked on determining the important information in text. We focused on really thinking about the information that is the most important - the things that the author would want us to remember. This is a skill that we will practice throughout 2nd grade! We also worked author's purpose for writing. We explored different texts that demonstrated authors who wrote to entertain, inform, and persuade. We worked on being able to explain our thinking. Don't forget to sign the September reading calendar! Finally, I am reading the chapter book, Wayside School, aloud to the class and they are loving it! Ask your child about it!
Word Study: Our focus this week has been on long A sound and spelling. We also worked on verb endings (s, ed, ing).
Writing Workshop: We spent a lot of time this past week working on our "All About Me" poster and our heart maps. During writing workshop time we discussed how the workshop works (minilesson, writing time, author share time). We wrote down a list of ideas for free write days in our writing journal and discussed that writers write what they know! We also finished a summer memory piece. We will be working on writing a personal narrative next week.
Math: This week concluded our work in Topic 1: Understanding Addition and Subtraction. We worked on writing addition and subtraction number sentences, learned the vocabulary words sum and difference and worked on separating stories. The class also had a chance to get on xtramath. Remember this is a great site that helps with basic facts. Has your child been on xtramath.org at home? I hope you are able to log on to the xtramath.org website. Our first math homework assignment is coming home tonight so be sure to work through the assigned pages.
Social Studies/Science: We continued working on our first unit in Social Studies over Citizenship. We have been creating classroom rules, writing our family promise, investigating responsibilities and attributes of a good citizen, identifying qualities of a good leader and talking about why we should do the "right thing" even when no one is looking!
"Ask Me About": This is a section of questions or items that you should ask your child about! I will provide an "Ask Me About" section each week!
