Reading: We continued Unit 4: Seasons and Weather in LEAD21. We read from our big book called, When the Moon is Full. This is a poetry book that is organized sequentially in order of the months of the year. Each month has a different moon and a poem that goes with the moon. Ask your child about it!
Our theme question for this unit is: How do weather and seasons affect our lives? Our fourth focus question is: How can we measure and predict weather? We reviewed all seven of our past weekly vocabulary words. We continued to work on the comprehension strategies of recognizing text structure and visualizing. Students have been asked to identify text structure and readers identify text structure by determining how a text is organized rather than by analyzing the content of the text itself. Recognizing how it is organized helps readers remember it. Some common text structures are: sequential, description/definition, compare/contrast and problem/solution. When students visualize, they use the words to create pictures in their minds or on paper. It is a great strategy for monitoring comprehension. In our small groups, we focused on text structure and discussed the ways we measure and predict weather. This week we worked on reviewing skills from the previous three weeks and worked on a test-taking strategy called the elimination strategy. We also continued with our read aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it! Please make sure to turn in your child’s January reading calendar next week!
Spelling/Word Study: We worked on syllable patterns this week and the schwa sound. Ask your child about the “Schwa Song.” We also worked on analogies and synonyms this week. The kiddos are really getting excited about these and are getting really good at recognizing how two words are compared. We even learned that writers use analogies to make their writing more interesting. We reviewed compound words as well as syllable patterns.
Writing Workshop: What a fun week in writing workshop! This week we began researching in the library on a biography of our choice. The kiddos learned how to use pebblego.com to take notes on a graphic organizer. We will continue this work next week when we work on taking our research and creating a book.
Math: We started Topic 11: Adding and Subtracting three-digit numbers! The focus on this unit is to work on regrouping with larger, three-digit numbers. We will be regrouping in both the tens and hundreds place. This is an important skill for 2nd graders to master this year. We also began working on time. Telling time is a challenge for a lot of students so it is a great idea to practice time at home using an analog clock. This week we focused on time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour and five minutes. We will be working on elapsed time next week.
Social Studies/Science: We worked on our celebration of Kansas’ 156th birthday this week. We created sunflowers with the Kansas State flag seal on the inside. We learned about the Kansas symbols and learned why we have 34 stars on our flag and what the words, “Ad Astra Per Aspera” mean. Ask your child!
"Ask Me About": This is a section of questions or items that you should ask your child about! I will provide an "Ask Me About" section each week!
