Reading: We wrapped up our work over Unit 4: Seasons and Weather in LEAD21. This week we reviewed our skills of cause and effect, text structure and visualization. We continued to work on reviewing skills from the previous three weeks and worked on a test-taking strategy called the elimination strategy. We took the unit 4 assessment and got ready to start Unit 5. This week we worked on our inquiry project and researched weather tools. We learned all about what satellites do how they help Meteorologists and fun facts about them. We also continued with our read aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Spelling/Word Study: We focused on the oo sounds this week. We also continued working on analogies and word endings –ing and –ed. We reviewed nouns, verbs and adjectives this week. Our major focus was on common versus proper nouns and we also worked on singular, plural and irregular plural nouns.
Writing Workshop: What a fun week in writing workshop! This week we continued researching in the library on a biography of our choice. The kiddos used their notes from their graphic organizer to create a biography book on the iPad app, Book Creator. They will be sharing them via SeeSaw next week.
Math: We worked through Topic 11: Adding and Subtracting three-digit numbers! The focus on this unit is to work on regrouping with larger, three-digit numbers. We did a lot of repetition with regrouping in both the tens and hundreds place. This is an important skill for 2nd graders to master this year. We also continued working on time. Telling time is a challenge for a lot of students so it is a great idea to practice time at home using an analog clock. This week we reviewed time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour and five minutes. Next week we will begin Topic 12: Geometry.
Social Studies/Science: We completed our bridge challenge in our unit on Matter in Science this week. The kiddos explored different materials and whether or not they were sturdy and could absorb water. Then they worked in groups of three to design a bridge using the engineer design process. We then tested them to see if they could hold wood blocks and water. The kiddos really enjoyed this experiment.
