Reading: We began Unit 5: Now and Then in LEAD21. In Unit 5, students will be learning the social studies concepts of past and present communities and how people and new ideas can change communities. Each week students will address one essential focus question related to our theme: Now and Then. Our focus question this week was: What was life like in the past? This week we read about how communities change over time in our big book: Unlock the Past, Build the Future. We used the comprehension strategy - summarize - to share the ideas from the story in our own words. I also introduced the comprehension skill of categorizing and classifying. We also worked on reading fluency and decoding strategies for reading accuracy.
In our small book groups, students read and discussed the first selection from their differentiated readers. Each story had some element of life in the past. Remember the goal is to have your child read at least 10 minutes a day! The pink February reading calendar is due at the end of the month so make sure to continue filling it out. We also continued with our read aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Spelling/Word Study: We reviewed the schwa sound - ask your child about the "schwa sound song" - it is to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus." We learned about prefixes this week and worked specifically with the un-, re- and mis- prefixes. We also continue to work with analogies.
Writing Workshop: We wrapped up our work on our research on a famous person. The kiddos completed their book creator biographies and have uploaded them on SeeSaw. Check them out!
Math: We continued working on Topic 12: Geometry. Unit 12 started with lessons on solid figures (3-D shapes). We learned about edges, faces and vertices (corners) on 3-D shapes and the names of them. We focused on a sphere, cube, cone, pyramid, cylinder, and rectangular prism. This week we worked on plane shapes, polygons such as triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon and hexagon. We used pattern blocks to create new shapes and to cut shapes into parts. Next week we will work on fractions and writing riddles for shapes. We continue to get on xtramath in class and I am seeing some good progress with basic facts. Has your child been on xtramath.org at home recently? I hope you are able to log on to the xtramath.org website. Be sure to work through the math workbook pages for homework this week!
Social Studies/Science: This week we tested out our bridge designs and every group had a successful bridge! Yay! The kiddos were so excited. We will wrap up our unit on Matter next week.
"Ask Me About": This is a section of questions or items that you should ask your child about! I will provide an "Ask Me About" section each week!
