Wednesday – Yellow - Computer/REAL (Library Check-Out Day)
Thursday – Green - Music/Spanish

Reading: We began Unit 2: "All Around Town" in LEAD21 this week. This unit's theme question is: How is science a part of our community? The focus question that we have been working on is: How are communities built?? We have been working on the vocabulary words: technology and plans. Through our nonfiction text "Science All Around" we have discovered many different ways that communities are built and the tools and technology that are used to build them. We have started discussing different ways of getting from one place to another (transportation) and how that has an effect on our environment (pollution). In our whole group lessons we have been working on the comprehension skill of making predictions. This has been wonderful to watch as the kiddos grow as readers! We continue to work on identifying important information, recall and retelling, making inferences, making connections and using context/picture clues. We have also been working really hard in our small book groups on connecting those stories and nonfiction selections to our overall theme question. Make sure to ask your child about the stories they are reading in their LEAD21 small group and have them show you them on the LEAD21 website! We also enjoyed our first reading log treat! Thank you to every family for turning in the September reading calendar. Remember the goal is to have your child read at least 10 minutes a day! Don't forget to sign the new orange October reading calendar!
Spelling/Word Study: We also focused on nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. We continue to work on how to break words into syllables and contractions. This week we worked on Long O. We have also been working on the Blue Valley sight words in class. Through LEAD21 this week we worked on the s sound of "ce/ci" and continued to work on contractions as well as words that have silent letters (gn, mb, kn, wr).
Writing Workshop: We continued work this week on the writing process.
Math: We wrapped up our work on Topic 4: Working with Equal Groups. This was a short and fun unit that worked on the concept of multiplication through repeated addition and arrays. I also introduced the concept of addition with regrouping and subtraction with regrouping. We used lots of math manipulatives to help model this concept of "carrying and borrowing." We are also working on odd and even numbers as well as weekly computation practice. Make sure to work through the math workbook pages for homework this week! I hope you were able to log on to the xtramath.org website. Check it out!
Social Studies/Science: This week we read Me On the Map and the kiddos created a mobile of where we are on the map. Make sure to ask your child about our continent, country, state, and city. The kiddos also put their map skills to the test by doing a map scavenger hunt in the library.
"Ask Me About": This is a section of questions or items that you should ask your child about! I will provide an "Ask Me About" section each week!
