Reading: We continued Unit 4: Seasons and Weather in LEAD21. We read from our big book called, When the Moon is Full. This is a poetry book that is organized sequentially in order of the months of the year. Each month has a different moon and a poem that goes with the moon. Ask your child about it!
Our theme question for this unit is: How do weather and seasons affect our lives? Our third focus question is: How does severe weather affect us? We reviewed all seven of our past weekly vocabulary words. We continued to work on the comprehension strategies of recognizing text structure and visualizing. Students have been asked to identify text structure and readers identify text structure by determining how a text is organized rather than by analyzing the content of the text itself. Recognizing how it is organized helps readers remember it. Some common text structures are: sequential, description/definition, compare/contrast and problem/solution. When students visualize, they use the words to create pictures in their minds or on paper. It is a great strategy for monitoring comprehension. In our small groups, we focused on text structure and discussed the ways we measure and predict weather. We also continued with our read aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Be sure to ask your child about it! Don’t forget about the January reading calendar!
Spelling/Word Study: Our word study focus was on the oo sounds. We worked on syllable patterns this week and the schwa sound. Ask your child about the “Schwa Song.” We also worked on analogies this week. The kiddos are really getting excited about these and are getting really good at recognizing how two words are compared. We even learned that writers use analogies to make their writing more interesting.
Writing Workshop: This week we worked on a weather writing piece using the picture book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. We read the story and created our own towns to do the weather forecast from. Then the students brainstormed ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner and wrote a weather forecast using their ideas. They are darling! Then we used the green screen app to share our weather forecasts! Check them out on SeeSaw!
Math: We finished Topic 10 this week and will start Topic 11 next week! We focused on comparing numbers, putting numbers in order from least to greatest/greatest to least, finding number patterns and exploring how to make challenging number patterns on our own. Make sure to work through the math workbook pages for homework this week! I hope you are able to log on to the xtramath.org website. Many students have passed their addition facts. Keep it up!
Social Studies/Science: We switched gears a little bit and focused on Social Studies this week. We began working on activities in Social Studies for Kansas Day! The students each created a Kansas Sunflower and learned all about the Kansas symbols.
"Ask Me About": This is a section of questions or items that you should ask your child about! I will provide an "Ask Me About" section each week!
